Description

The Dell PowerEdge R760 is a 2-U dual-socket server optimized for demanding enterprise workloads. According to Dell’s spec sheet, it supports up to two CPUs from the 4th or 5th Generation Intel® Xeon Scalable family with up to 64 cores each.

This configuration includes **2 × Intel Xeon Gold 6430** processors (32 cores each), delivering significant compute power for virtualization, databases, high throughput storage or AI serving. Memory is modest in this configuration but the server has **32 DIMM slots**, allowing substantial expansion later.

Storage is based on 8 × 1 TB SSDs (can be SAS/SATA or NVMe U.2 depending on backplane) using the **PERC H755N** RAID controller, which offers hardware RAID features and improved performance for NVMe/SSD-based storage.

Networking is provided by **2 × X710-AD4 SFP+** NICs, giving you fast 10 GbE connectivity (or depending on model version, these may support 25 Gb or mixed modes) for cluster/leaf switch or storage access. Management is handled via iDRAC (Dell’s remote management) with options for “Advanced” licensing or capability. Bezel and rails are included so rack mounting & physical managing is easier.

Power supplies are **dual 1400 W Platinum** units, providing redundancy and enough capacity for moderate to high load, especially with SSD/NVMe storage and full CPU load. The R760 supports various power supply options; 1400 W Platinum is one of the supported PSUs.

Key Features

  • 2U Rack-mount form factor, dual CPU sockets (supports 4th & 5th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable)
  • Xeon Gold 6430 CPUs (32 cores each) — good balance of core count vs efficiency
  • PERC H755N RAID Controller for SSD/NVMe RAID support
  • 8 × 1 TB SSD drives (SAS/SATA or NVMe U.2) for high I/O storage
  • Network via dual X710-AD4 SFP+ NICs
  • Dual 1400 W Platinum hot-swap power supplies for redundancy and stable power delivery
  • Includes mounting rails & bezel for rack deployment; management via iDRAC with optional advanced license
  • Memory expansion possible up to 32 DDR5 RDIMM slots at speeds up to ~5600 MT/s (depending on CPU generation)

Configuration

ComponentSpecification
ModelDell PowerEdge R760 (2U Rack Server)
CPUs2 × Intel Xeon Gold 6430 (32 cores each)
Memory4 × 32 GB RDIMM (with ~28 DIMM slots free for expansion)
Storage8 × 1 TB SSDs (SAS/SATA or NVMe U.2) + RAID via PERC H755N
Network2 × X710-AD4 SFP+ NICs
Power Supply2 × 1400 W Platinum hot-swap redundant PSUs
Chassis / ExtrasRails, Bezel, iDRAC Advanced (or equivalent management license)
Memory Slots Available32 total DDR5 RDIMM slots (you currently using 4)

Compatibility

The R760 supports **up to 32 DDR5 RDIMM** slots, speeds up to ~5600 MT/s when using compatible 5th-Gen Intel Xeon CPUs.

Supported RAID controllers include PERC H755, H755N, H355 and others. Your choice of H755N is fully supported for mixed SSD/NVMe configurations.

For storage, front drive bay options allow up to 24 × 2.5″ SAS/SATA/NVMe, or up to 12 × 3.5″ SAS/SATA. So 8 × SSDs is well within supported drive count.

Usage Scenarios

Enterprise Virtualization — Dual 32-core CPUs plus SSD/NVMe RAID make it excellent for hosting many VMs or containers.

High I/O Storage & Databases — With SSD/NVMe drives and fast RAID, suited for databases, real-time analytics, or caching layers.

Edge / High-Bandwidth Services — Dual SFP+ NICs provide fast interconnect for high throughput workloads or clustered storage.

Batch Compute / AI Inference — Enough CPU, storage speed, and expansion capacity to support inference or compute workloads without GPU (or adding GPU later).

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: Can this configuration support GPUs?
A: Yes — the R760 supports GPU options (up to 2 double-width GPUs or up to 6 single-width GPUs depending on cooling and power supply configuration) in some variants.

Q2: What is maximum memory capacity?
A: Up to ~8 TB using 32 DDR5 RDIMMs (depends on CPU generation) on R760. Your current 4 × 32 GB uses only a fraction.

Q3: Is 1400 W Platinum enough power for this spec plus extra drives later?
A: For current spec (8 × SSDs, 2 CPUs) 2 × 1400W Platinum PSUs provide good headroom. If adding many NVMe SSDs, more drives, or GPUs, power & cooling margins should be checked.

Q4: Can the PERC H755N controller support both NVMe and SATA in same configuration?
A: Yes — H755N is a mixed controller supporting NVMe and SATA/SAS drives; care must be taken to use correct backplane / wiring and firmware settings.
